Jacinta’s Journey

Jacinta repeatedly failed to access the NDIS. Living in public housing, her housing officer, Danielle, contacted our support coordinator, Nikki.
Nikki recognised Jacinta's eligibility and, with consent, retrieved her medical history from the 1990s. Despite past rejections, Nikki's dedication helped Jacinta finally qualify.

Eligibility FAQs

  • Individuals under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability that substantially impacts their ability to participate effectively in everyday activities may be eligible for the NDIS.

  • Eligibility for the NDIS is based on various factors, including age, residency status, and the nature and impact of your disability. You can check your eligibility by contacting the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) or completing the Access Checklist on the NDIS website found here.

  • The NDIS provides support for a wide range of disabilities, including intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive, and psychosocial disabilities. The key criterion is that the disability is permanent and significantly affects your ability to participate in daily activities.

  • Yes, it is necessary to have a diagnosis to access the NDIS. This diagnosis helps establish eligibility by confirming that your condition likely results in an impairment that significantly affects your daily activities.

  • The NDIS is designed for individuals under the age of 65. If you're over 65, you may be eligible for other forms of aged care or disability support provided by state or territory governments.

  • Yes, you can apply for the NDIS on behalf of a family member or someone you care for. However, you'll need their consent and may need to provide supporting documentation about their disability.

  • In some cases, individuals who hold a Protected Special Category visa may be eligible for the NDIS. However, eligibility criteria can vary, so it's best to check with the NDIA or relevant authorities for specific guidance.

  • It's possible that the NDIS has determined you do not meet the eligibility criteria.

    The NDIA might find that other service systems are better suited to provide your supports.

    To find organisations that offer assistance nationally and in various states and territories, please refer to the NDIS website page on support for individuals who do not qualify.

  • If you believe there has been an error and you should be eligible for the NDIS, you have the option to request an internal review of the access decision.

  • You should begin preparing for your planning meeting with the NDIS, a process known as pre-planning. Since the NDIS operates differently in providing support, thorough preparation is crucial to grasp its workings, familiarise yourself with its terminology, and articulate your needs effectively to ensure the best possible outcome.

MYTH: Contrary to popular belief, you can access the NDIS even if you receive benefits from Centrelink.

The NDIS primarily focuses on enhancing daily life, while Centrelink primarily provides assistance with housing and financial matters.
